Black River Falls/Harbor - Michigan's Upper Peninsula

Black River Falls BeachBlack River Falls is a diverse park with a harbor, ramp, hiking trails, large open park, beach and camping close by. Located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan just a few miles north of Bessemer Michigan.

The park offers amenities for everyone. The large secluded beach and a large grass area to picnic are perfect for families. For the boater or fisherman there is access to the Black River and Lake Michigan. The Nature lovers, hikers and fitness enthusiasts will love the rugged natural trails.  

Black River Falls BridgeThe main park area has a huge open grass area perfect for letting the kids burn off that excess energy from being in the car on the long trip up north. There are picnic tables and grills available for use. Public restrooms are available too!

Trail Map for Black River Falls Hiking TrailsAcross the suspension bridge is a large secluded sand beach. Great for hanging out with friends and  family, catching some rays or a long pensive walk to reflect on life. The beach is a coarse sand with small gravel mixed in. The water is usually chilly, but clean and refreshing. The shore has a nice shallow slop perfect for wading in. The path to get to the beach is sandy with some minor obstacles and will not be easy for those with handicaps or disabilities.

Kyra on the steps at Black River FallsThe boat ramp is in good condition, large and easy to navigate. Boat fuel is also sold at the harbor. The harbor has boat slips available for rent, both seasonal and transient slips are available. The slips are tie-up points along the harbor and river walls, and have a nice wide walk way that runs along the shore. The harbor is well protected by a rock walls leading out into the lake.

Hiking Trails at Black River FallsThose who like to hike rugged trails will love the trail system at Black River Falls. For the most part these trails are very rugged. In a few key spots there are steps and small bridges. Several man made decks are placed to allow viewing of the many waters falls along the trail. As you can see in the picture the steps are steep and can be a challenge for those with disabilities. However the nature lover and true hiker will appreciate the minimal disturbance and natural feel of the trails. Markers are placed along the trails that are easy to follow. In several places there are multiple routes you may take. These can make the hike easier or more difficult depending on your hiking wishes. These trails can be steep and may some run along drop offs, so make sure you keep an eye on the kids and dogs.

Water Fall At Black River FallsOne word of caution about the Black River Falls Park, with the exception of the main open area, the park is rugged and not the most accepting to those with disabilities or handicaps.   The trails have many small obstacles. This is a park for the true nature lover.

To get to Black River Falls, take US 2 into Bessemer, turn North onto Powder Horn Rd, at the Ski hill follow the road to the right. Powder Horn Rd will dead end into Black River Rd (Co. Hwy 513), take a right and the road will dead end in the park's parking lot. Note there are several points prior to the main park to park your car and get on the hiking trail.
